You can use the USB-based Environment Sensors with a virtual machine by redirecting the USB port from the Virtual Machine Host computer to the Virtual Machine Guest computer.

To redirect the USB port in VMWare:
https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-horizon-view-usb-device-redirection.pdf

To redirect the USB port in Hyper-V:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn282274.aspx (select the sensor under the "Other supported Plug and Play devices" category)

For other Virtual Machine vendors, please inquire with your vendor about how to redirect or forward USB ports for physical devices such as hardware tokens. The sensor cannot be used through an IP address pass-through unless it appears as a USB resource in the Virtual Machine Guest operating system. The sensor can only be queried as a local USB device.
