On my Windows Server 2003 with service pack 1 (SP1) I am unable to start the EventSentry Service (Agent), and the EventSentry management console also won't load. All EventSentry-related applications seem to fault (crash) either immediately or a short while after they were started.

All EventSentry executable files (eventsentry_svc.exe, eventsentry_hb_svc.exe, eventsentry_gui.exe) use a copy-protection mechanism that interfers with the data execution prevention (DEP) which was added to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with service pack 1. Please note that this problem only affects computers where the CPU natively supports DEP, which is most new systems.

To workaround this problem you will need to exclude the mentioned executable files from DEP. Please follow the following steps:

1) Right-Click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Properties"
2) Click the "Advanced" tab
3) In the PERFORMANCE area click on the "Settings" button.
4) Select the "Data Execution Prevention" tab
5) Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
6) Click the "Add" button and browse to the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\eventsentry_svc.exe file.

If you installed the heartbeat monitor agent on this computer then repeat step 6 for the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\eventsentry_hb_svc.exe file.

If you installed the management application on this computer then repeat step 6 for the \Program Files\EventSentry\eventsentry_gui.exe file. This file is located in the directory where you installed EventSentry.

A reboot is not necessary after performing these steps.
